Andrew Blake

20 years ago Andrew Blake made us question, “Is it porn or art?” We’ve been fans since the very beginning with Night Trips, Secrets, & House of Dreams. He schooled us with erotic art & introduced us to the most beautiful women in the industry. His cinematic presentation & style was so yuhmmi it was impossible to not become a fan. Andrew’s lush imagination gave us everything we wanted… limos & long legs, mansions & muscle, pools & pussy, champagne & cum shots. What more could a boy or girl want?

I graduated High School in 1989. This was the same year your film Night Trips was released. Not only was I infatuated with star Tori Welles, but I was also blown away by your artistic approach. Did you sense the impact your style was going to have on the adult film industry at the time you were making Night Trips?

I decided to make a hard-core sex-film in 1989, after completing work on a Playboy Channel TV series featuring the Playmates of that era. Playboy was pure vanilla and I wanted to see what I could do without the problems of working in the soft-core genre. The movie I wanted to make would combine beautiful women, fashion and interior design. I had seen a bunch of porn films from that time at Playboy, since they aired titles that they cut all the hard sex out of. I wanted to make the same kind of films I was doing at Playboy, with a hard-core sexual element. The market at that time was mostly ‘one day wonders’ shot on videotape with a few features shot on film appearing now and then, as the theatrical business dried up. Shooting on film was important to me then as it is today with production values and art-direction of ‘mainstream’ Hollywood. I saw nothing really in the porn world that even came close. This was a calculated move on my part; I knew there was a hugh audience for Playboy’s brand of sexuality, but knew in my heart they wanted to see something much more explicit, a bit kinkier and much higher production values than the porn producers could deliver. I doubt even that it occurred to the porn producers that this audience existed.

Looks like you have an American Indian inspired tattoo on your arm. Tell us the story behind it.

I’m Mexican American, Aztec and Spanish. I’ve always had a fascination for Native American artwork and ever since I was little, I always pictured myself with feathers and tribal designs. When I turned 18, my first tattoo was a tribal band with feathers on my right arm. The feathers are from an eagle that symbolizes truth, power and freedom and the wings on an eagle represent the balance from a female and male, “each one dependent upon strengths and abilities of the other.” My real last name means eagle. The dream catcher on my arm doesn’t really have any significant meaning to me. It’s just a cool piece of art.

Give us the low down on how you got started as an illustrator.

I wasn’t one of those lucky people that was born drawing. I was in my late teens before I started really getting into art and probably 21 before I even touched a Wacom. I went to study art but only lasted a year. Where I was studying didn’t offer much by way of digital arts which was where I was leaning too heavily so I just dropped out and decided to teach myself. Not sure I would recommend that technique to everyone, but the DIY approach has been good to me so far. I just kind of started and I’ve been lucky enough to get away with it.

You are a formally trained ballet dancer and a former Vegas showgirl. I’d love to see you whoop ass on Dancing with the Stars. If cast on the show, do you think you could go all the way?

Hell ya! I would love to be on Dancing with the Stars. That show is so fun to watch because I love dancing. I think I would surprise a lot of people.

At what age did you know that photography was your calling?

I first got interested in photography in high school when I learned from one of my teachers that there was a darkroom located in the school, primarily utilized for year book photography. I wandered into the lab one day and was seduced by the sense of alchemy the darkroom offers, the amber lights, the chemistry and the process involved in developing negatives and prints. When I went off to college in 1974, I enrolled in a photography course and have been in love with the medium ever since.
